How to Store a Mango the Right Way?

How to Store a Mango the Right Way?

Mangoes come in many shapes and sizes. You can eat it raw when it’s tangy with masalas and salt, or even add it to different chaat dishes like bhel! If you have a sweet tooth, you can also enjoy fresh and ripe mango cut, pulped, or in the form of any dessert recipe! All forms of Mango are super-tasty and can be enjoyed when they are in their best condition, depending on how they are stored. Listed below are 3 fruitful tips on how to store your mangoes the right way, so that they will remain ripe and fresh for a longer time!

How to Keep Your Mangoes Ripe and Fresh for a Long Time?

What to remember before buying mangoes?

Purchasing mangoes is the start of this journey. If you are buying mangoes in bulk, one batch can be ready to eat, but make sure some of them are unripe so that they can be eaten later. As you will be storing the rest of your mangoes, buying unripened mangoes is the best option, as they will need around 7-8 days to become ripe and sweet!

3 Best Ways to Store Your Mangoes

1. To Ripen Your Mangoes

Unripe mangoes need around 7 to 8 days to turn fully ripe. To spot the difference, an unripe mango will usually be hard and green in color. Your mango turns a little less firm and more yellow as it ripens. The best method to store unripened mangoes is to keep them in wooden boxes. Keeping these boxes in dark and at room temperature is useful, as this lets them ripen at their natural speed.

To figure out if your mango is fresh and ready to eat, check how it smells. Your ripe mango will be a little softer, but the most distinct change will be its sweet, fruity aroma! If you wish to speed up the process of ripening, you can put your mangoes in a paper bag and store them.

2. To Store Ripe Mangoes

Have ripe & cut mangoes that you don’t want to throw away? Don’t worry, we got you covered! Once you have cut mangoes, storing them in the fridge is the best way to keep them ripe for a few days. This method helps to maintain the flavor as cold temperatures will naturally slow down the process of ripening. Exposing your ripe mangoes to air can ripen them further, so make sure you are using air-tight containers. You can store ripe, cut mangoes in the fridge for 5 to 6 days.

3. To Store Your Mangoes for a Long Time

To preserve your ripe mangoes for a long time, you need to freeze them. The first step is to peel and cut your mango into small pieces, as these will freeze better than big chunks. Next, throw them all in a ziplock, without putting too many in one bag.

You can use 2-3 ziplocks to avoid overcrowding the mango pieces. Try your best to remove as much air as you can from the ziplock, and seal your mango pieces. Lay them horizontally in your freezer, and make sure that they are stored under 0 degrees celsius or -18 degrees Fahrenheit.

After around 5-6 months, you can defrost your mangoes by transferring them to the fridge and enjoy a cool fruity snack, even when it’s not summer! Frozen mangoes are also an amazing addition to various dessert dishes like cakes, icecreams, puddings, and custards, and a great way to garnish!

Conclusion

If you have bought multiple mangoes but did not know how to store them properly, I hope this blog helped you understand not just one, but many ways to store them! These methods will not only keep your mangoes from getting spoiled sooner but will also let you enjoy mangoes in various forms. To enjoy fresh and organic mangoes which taste superb, order from KonkanMangoes today!

The word ‘mango’ is either derived from “mankay” (Tamil) or “mangga” (Malayalam) and was finally crowned “mango” in the 15th and 16th centuries when the British traded in India. Mangoes are also the national fruit of not just one, but three countries- India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, proving how loved it is across the globe!

Summer Holidays, Grandma, Konkan, & Mangoes… Golden Days!

Konkan Mangoes

Was going through my Instagram where one of my friends had posted a story with a box full of mangoes and a thank you note by this brand called Konkan Mango. I immediately felt like ordering one box for my family and I did. When the mangoes were delivered to my place, you might think I was exaggerating but before the delivery guy pressed that doorbell, I could literally sense that he was here. Wonder how? The enchanting aroma of Devgad Alphonso Mangoes of Konkan!

When I unboxed the mangoes, my mind manifested my entire childhood when I used to visit my grandma’s house in Devgad. Though it has been a few years since I last visited my Grandma’s place, I can surely say that the place has not changed much. I keep hearing a lot of stories and travel experiences of people visiting Devgad & other places in Konkan. And I often think to myself how different everything was in Konkan when I was a kid. So I decided to take you all back to the days when I was a kid and used to visit my Grandma’s place in Devgad.

My parents used to book train tickets a couple of months before the summer holidays as the number of people going to Konkan in Summer is crazy! One day there was a tremendous rush on the train and I annoyingly asked my father why there was such a huge rush. I remember him smiling and telling me that half of them are from Konkan, so they are traveling back to their homes and the other half are going simply to taste Devgad Hapus Mangoes! That was when I realized how amazing the Devgad Mangoes are.

After hours of traveling, we reached Devgad and went home. My grandma was waiting for us at the door with an Aarti Thali in her hand. We all got fresh and grandma called us for lunch. It was extremely hot as the sun was at its peak and we were super tired. But the moment I saw the food, all tiredness vanished in a moment! I still remember every item in the Thali. It was Ghavan (made of rice flour), Fanas (Jackfruit) curry, Amti, Steam Rice, Kurdai, Papad, Bhaji (Pakoda), and of course, Aam Ras (Mango Milkshake)! The entire house was filled with the mouthwatering aroma of Devgad Hapus Mango.

After a heavy lunch, all we could think about was sleep! We took a good nap and later woke up to a cup of… not tea! But Kairi Panha, a raw mango drink that is supremely healthy and unbelievably tasty! After a refreshing drink, I insisted on my father for around in the town. He took me to the market and we bought some items on our way back home, all I was paying attention to was the Vadis (gardens).

Let me tell you a fact about Konkan & Konkani people. They might not purchase expensive cars or build mansions, but they will surely have big Vadis where they grow all the rich foods such as cashew, mangoes, jackfruit, coconut, and much more. Their idea of wealth is very different and I am fond of their love for nature.

While returning home, I decided to pay a visit to at least one vadi. As I discussed this idea with my Grandpa, he immediately said that he will not only take me to his friend’s Vadi but also take me to a Hapus Mango Farm in Devgad. Happy as heaven, I slept early to wake up early in the morning.

Our whole family got ready and we all went to Appa’s friend’s Vadi where his friend showed us how they take care of each tree & plant. What all fruits are there, what veggies, how do they use organic compost, and that was all super exciting for me as I used to read a lot about organic farming in my science periods in school.

We then headed towards a Devgad Hapus Mango Farm. As we were getting close to the farm, we experienced a cool breeze and delectable aroma. We soon entered a farm where Appa’s friend welcomed us all. He took us on a tiny tour of the farm where it was all greenery, pleasant silence, birds chirping, and people working. What made me gawk was that even kids & ladies were working hard on that farm.

My parents, grandparents, & Appa’s friends told me about how mango farming is performed and what is the importance of Organic Mango Farming in Konkan. There were hundreds of mango boxes getting loaded in trucks that were supposed to be shipped out of India! That was when it dawned on me that the Mangoes we eat here have tremendous demand in the International market as well.

I was curious & excited to learn a lot about Organic Hapus Mango Farming in Devgad as everything they use is natural. No chemicals, no artificial fertilizers, nothing! Soon everybody heard the loud noise of my stomach grumbling. Appa’s friend treated all of us with great food and of course a lot of Aam Ras. The Aam Ras doused my hunger and I loved every moment of that day! They even gifted us a box of mangoes while we headed back home. That summer vacation was amazing and that is why I call it the Golden Days of My Life!

Now that I have ordered this box of happiness, I can relive my childhood. In my busy schedule of work, I rarely get time to step out of Pune. For every person like me who misses their childhood treasures, you all can relive every memory by simply ordering original Konkan Mangoes online.
